Sampling Cards

In a standard deck of 52 cards, we will note the value of the following variables for each card:

  • Point value: Ace = 1, 2–10 = face value, Jack/Queen/King = 10.
  • Type of card: Face card (Jack, Queen, or King) or not a face card.

Here are the population distributions of point value and type of card. The distribution of point value has mean μ = 6.54 and standard deviation σ = 3.15. The distribution of type of card has proportion of face cards p = 0.23.

The applet will calculate x̄ = sample mean point value and p̂ = sample proportion of type of card for a random sample of cards. The applet will then record each of these values on the appropriate dotplot.
